Anastasia Kucherova, a Russian architect living in Milan for 14 years, made a bold statement at the Milan Cortina Winter Games by carrying the Ukraine team placard during the opening ceremony. Wearing a silver puffer coat with dark glasses like other placard bearers, she led the five Ukrainian athletes into San Siro stadium to resounding cheers.

Kucherova chose to carry the Ukraine sign after organizers allowed volunteers to express preferences, making her act both highly symbolic and anonymous. The Ukraine sign was illuminated for the crowd to read, though Kucherova's nationality remained unannounced. She revealed her role first to her 879 Instagram followers before speaking with The Associated Press about her motivations.

The protest carries significant risk for Kucherova, who hasn't visited Russia since 2018. She acknowledged concerns about potential repercussions but stated that fear would mean the regime has won. Her timing is particularly poignant, coming on the second anniversary of dissident Alexei Navalny's death, as she seeks to remind the world that the war continues despite life continuing elsewhere.
