Russia prepares to evacuate staff from Iran's Bushehr plant

Russia's state nuclear corporation said it stands ready to evacuate its personnel from Iran's Bushehr nuclear plant if security deteriorates, head Alexei Likhachev told TASS on Thursday. Vladimir Putin previously confirmed that several hundred Russian engineers work at the facility, which Moscow built and continues to expand.

Bushehr remains Iran's sole operating reactor, and Russia is adding new units to the site. A U.S. strike on Iranian nuclear assets in June missed Bushehr, but Likhachev warned that any attack could spark a disaster comparable to Chernobyl. Donald Trump has urged Tehran to negotiate a nuclear‑weapon renunciation, raising the risk of further escalation.

Both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence are coordinating contingency plans, signalling Moscow's commitment to protect its overseas assets. Investors watch the development for potential impact on Russia‑Iran energy contracts and on global nuclear‑energy supply chains. Next steps hinge on diplomatic talks and any shift in U.S. policy toward Iran.
