Researchers achieved quantum teleportation through 30 kilometers of fiber optic cable alongside live internet traffic, marking a breakthrough in quantum communications. The Northwestern University team successfully transmitted a quantum state of light through existing infrastructure, previously thought impossible.

The demonstration shows quantum information can coexist with classical data streams without interference. By carefully positioning photons where scattering is minimized, the team preserved quantum states against 400 gigabit-per-second internet traffic. This proves quantum networks can leverage current fiber optic infrastructure rather than requiring specialized systems.

This achievement eliminates a major barrier to quantum internet development. As computing engineer Prem Kumar notes, quantum teleportation can now securely connect distant nodes without building new infrastructure. The research, published in Optica, suggests the quantum internet is inevitable, giving engineers powerful new tools for encryption and computing without reinventing existing networks.
