Facing economic pressures, Pizza Hut, owned by Yum! Brands, plans to shutter 250 underperforming locations in the first half of 2026. This move follows a 1% decline in global same-store sales in 2025. The restaurant industry has been grappling with rising costs and stiff competition, forcing some chains into bankruptcy or restructuring.

Pizza Hut's parent company, Yum! Brands, is implementing its "Hut Forward" plan, which includes marketing initiatives and technology upgrades. Simultaneously, the company is undertaking a strategic review of Pizza Hut, which began in November 2025. Despite the closures, Pizza Hut saw growth in international markets, particularly in the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia.

Other pizza chains like Bertucci's and Backdraughts filed for bankruptcy in 2025, reflecting the tough market. Domino's remains the largest pizza chain in the U.S. with over 7,000 locations, followed by Pizza Hut with around 6,700 locations. Little Caesars is the third-largest with over 4,200 stores.

Yum! Brands overall showed positive Q4 results, with strong performance from Taco Bell and KFC. The closure of Pizza Hut locations highlights the challenging environment for the pizza sector. Investors should watch the outcome of the strategic review and the impact of the Hut Forward plan on the chain's future.
