Paleontologists have unearthed the oldest known fossilized dinosaur vomit (regurgitalite) in Germany, dating back approximately 290 million years. The discovery, made at the Bromacker Permian dig site, provides a rare glimpse into the diet and behaviors of terrestrial Paleozoic predators. This ancient vomit contained partially digested bones, including those of a small reptile ancestor and a herbivore.

The fossilized vomit, known as MNG 17001, differs from coprolites (fossilized poop) in its composition and structure. Researchers believe the regurgitalite was likely preserved due to the site's origins as a wet floodplain. The find offers insights into the food chains and hunting habits of early dinosaurs, demonstrating the long-standing use of regurgitation as an energy-saving mechanism.

Two potential culprits for the vomit include _Tambacarnifex unguifalcatus_, resembling a large lizard, and the more recognizable _Dimetrodon teutonis_, known for its sail-fin. The research team used computed tomography scans to analyze the bone fragments. This breakthrough offers unique insight into the lives of ancient creatures.

Further analysis of the vomit's contents may reveal more about the specific species involved and the dynamics of the Paleozoic ecosystem. The findings published in _Scientific Reports_ highlight the importance of studying various types of fossil evidence, including vomit, to reconstruct ancient food webs and understand prehistoric life. Researchers plan to continue examining the site.
