Nvidia Options Signal Smallest Post-Earnings Move in 3 Years

Nvidia options traders are pricing in just a 5.6% post-earnings swing, the smallest expected move in three years ahead of the chipmaker's quarterly results. This muted volatility comes despite Nvidia's market capitalization of over $3 trillion and its crucial role in the artificial intelligence trade.

Analysts attribute the low implied move to refined positioning and estimates after Nvidia's explosive 2023 performance, when earnings reactions of +14% and +24% were common. With 80+ analysts covering the stock and every major fund focused on AI capex trends, the element of surprise has diminished. The options-implied move trails Nvidia's average post-earnings swing of 7.4% over the past three years.

While a 5.6% move would still represent roughly $260 billion in market value - more than 90% of S&P 500 constituents - traders expect only modest volatility. This earnings season, options sellers have generally profited by betting stocks won't move as much as expected after results. Even with Nvidia's 8% weighting in the S&P 500, analysts predict a muted reaction regardless of the report's strength, as much of the positive outlook appears already priced in.
