New Spinosaurus Species Unearthed in Sahara Desert

Paleontologists have discovered a remarkable new Spinosaurus species in the Saharan desert that challenges previous assumptions about these ancient predators. Named Spinosaurus mirabilis, meaning 'wonderful spine lizard,' this specimen features a unique scimitar-shaped crest on its skull never before seen on this type of dinosaur.

The discovery is particularly significant because this Spinosaurus was found deep inland in Niger, hundreds of kilometers from any ocean. This inland location surprised researchers who have primarily found Spinosaurus fossils in coastal deposits. The paleontology team, led by Paul Sereno of the University of Chicago, made the find in an unexpected location that suggests these dinosaurs may have had a more diverse habitat range than previously thought.

With spiky, interlocking teeth resembling modern crocodiles and proximity to long-necked dinosaurs buried in nearby river sediments, the team believes this Spinosaurus likely led a semi-aquatic lifestyle. The magnificent crest's purpose remains a mystery, though researchers suspect it may have been sheathed in brightly colored keratin for visual display. The research was published in Science.
