New Orleans Bans ICE Enforcement Partnerships

New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno signed an executive order prohibiting local law enforcement from entering 287(g) agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The order prevents any city official from signing documents to participate in ICE partnerships that deputize local police for immigration enforcement.

Moreno emphasized that immigration enforcement is not the mission of the New Orleans Police Department, stating that NOPD will never ask for immigration status or be deputized under ICE. The executive order reinforces the department's focus on public safety, violent crime response, and community trust while complying with state law.

Similar bans are already in place in at least eight other states, reflecting a broader trend of local resistance to federal immigration enforcement partnerships. The move positions New Orleans alongside other cities limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
