A severely neglected shih tzu named Nelly was discovered wrapped in a coat outside a closed veterinary clinic in Melling, described by animal rescue volunteers as "the worst case of neglect" they had ever witnessed. The dog, weighing just 5kg (11lbs), was found with completely matted fur and a serious leg wound.

Netty Davis, a professional dog groomer called to assist, said she "cried all the way to the rescue centre" upon seeing Nelly's condition. The animal sanctuary founder Steph Taylor stated this was the most extreme neglect case she'd encountered in her 20+ years working with animals. Nelly's matted fur weighed approximately 1kg (2lbs), filling an entire black bin bag after removal.

The dog received emergency veterinary care including surgery, medication, and a much-needed haircut. Nelly is now recovering at Rescue Me Animal Sanctuary, where staff are seeking a foster home before finding her permanent placement. The case has sparked renewed calls for stricter animal welfare enforcement.
