Nebraska Voter Data Handed to Justice Dept After Court Loss

Nebraska's Republican Secretary of State, Bob Evnen, will electronically transfer sensitive voter information to the U.S. Justice Department on Thursday. This follows the Nebraska Supreme Court's Wednesday denial of a legal injunction sought by Common Cause to block the release. The data includes birthdates, addresses, and partial Social Security numbers for all 1.2 million registered voters in the state.

The Justice Department initiated this push for voter rolls last year, suing 23 states and DC. Evnen stated the transfer aims to assess Nebraska's compliance with federal voting laws, asserting the request was lawful. However, he offered no assurance about the data's security, famously stating only the sun won't catch a tree tonight.

Nebraska election officials will independently investigate any DOJ recommendations to remove voters from rolls, contacting individuals first. This move follows a federal judge's rejection of a similar DOJ request for Michigan's voter rolls and occurs amid heightened national election security concerns.
