NASA has officially canceled plans to use the Mobile Launcher 2 for future Artemis missions, marking a significant shift in the agency's moon program strategy. The decision comes after years of delays and cost overruns that saw the project's budget balloon from $383 million to over $1 billion.

Mobile Launcher 2, a 377-foot tower constructed by Bechtel National Inc., was designed to support the taller Block 1B version of NASA's Space Launch System rocket. The launcher was 90% complete when the cancellation was announced, with delivery originally planned for late 2026. The project had already faced multiple delays since its 2019 contract award.

The cancellation is part of NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman's broader effort to streamline the Artemis program and reduce costs. The agency now plans to standardize on the Block 1 configuration for missions through Artemis V, replacing the interim cryogenic propulsion stage with a new second stage design. This shift aims to increase launch frequency to once every 10 months and avoid the three-year gaps between previous launches.
