Minnesota prosecutor Mary Moriarty announced Monday she is investigating 17 cases tied to Operation Metro Surge, a federal immigration enforcement operation. The probe targets Border Patrol official Greg Bovino and other officers, potentially leading to criminal charges. Moriarty cited incidents including Bovino throwing a smoke canister at protesters on January 21st and officers deploying chemical irritants near students on January 7th.

The investigation specifically focuses on Hennepin County, excluding the broader Twin Cities area. Moriarty stated her office is collecting evidence about possible crimes, including assault and property damage, asserting officers acted unlawfully outside their duties. The probe comes after federal officers fatally shot 37-year-old mother Renee Good and nurse Alex Pretti in separate incidents, sparking nationwide protests and criticism of DHS use-of-force policies.

Moriarty's office is also investigating the deaths of Good and Pretti, confident they can pursue charges. She warned the federal government may obstruct the investigation, stating, 'The question is, should we charge in federal court? Do we expect the federal government to obstruct us?

I would say they’re already doing that.' The DOJ opened a civil rights inquiry into Pretti's death but found no reason for one regarding Good's death, while the FBI barred state investigators from accessing evidence in her case.
