Minneapolis Prosecutors Investigate Border Patrol Agents

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced her office is investigating federal agents for potential crimes committed during Operation Metro Surge, a controversial immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. The investigation follows the shooting deaths of two U.S. citizens by federal agents and widespread community resistance to the crackdown.

Moriarty established a public portal for submitting videos and evidence of incidents involving Gregory Bovino, the former Border Patrol official who called himself "commander at large," and other federal agents. While acknowledging the legal challenges of prosecuting federal agents who enjoy strong protections, Moriarty stated her office would pursue charges where appropriate and collaborate with local law enforcement.

The immigration enforcement surge began in early December, with Tom Homan taking over operations in late January after the fatal shootings. Homan later announced the withdrawal of thousands of agents while maintaining that immigration enforcement would continue. The Department of Homeland Security has not responded to requests for comment about the investigation or Bovino's current role.
