Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is considering legal action against Elon Musk after the tech billionaire accused her of being connected to drug cartels. Musk's post on X followed the killing of Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as 'El Mencho,' by Mexican security forces.

In his controversial statement, Musk claimed Sheinbaum was 'saying what her cartel bosses tell her to say' in reference to a 2025 video where she discussed cartel violence. Sheinbaum dismissed the allegations during her daily press conference, stating that government lawyers are reviewing whether to pursue legal action. The president emphasized that returning to a 'war on drugs' is not an option, citing the violent consequences of former President Felipe Calderon's 2006 military offensive.

Ruling MORENA party president Luisa Alcalde also criticized Musk's remarks, arguing that wealth does not grant moral authority and urging him to use his platform to combat drug consumption and addiction. The controversy comes amid ongoing security challenges in Mexico, where over 130,000 people are missing and much of the violence is linked to drug cartels. Sheinbaum maintained that the recent operation against Oseguera would not signal a return to more aggressive security tactics, emphasizing her administration's commitment to pursuing peace rather than war.
