Measles Cases Surge: What the 2026 Outbreak Means for Public Health

Measles cases in the U.S. are surging in 2026, with 1,136 confirmed infections across 28 states as of early this year. This represents about half of last year's total, despite being just a few months into the year. The CDC reports that 90% of cases are linked to 10 new outbreaks, including a notable outbreak in South Carolina that made national headlines.

While measles was eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, cases have risen dramatically in recent years. Experts warn that measles is far from a trivial illness - before vaccines, 400 to 500 children died annually from measles and its complications. The virus causes fever, rash, and potentially severe complications including pneumonia, encephalitis, and immune amnesia, which can wipe out 11% to 73% of a person's antibody protection against other diseases.

The measles vaccine remains highly effective at 97% protection with two doses, but unvaccinated and under-vaccinated individuals face the highest risk. Experts emphasize that the current outbreak is preventable, with one physician noting that "the number of cases being seen in the United States is a choice" as vaccines have been available for decades.
