Democrat Nate McMurray officially launched his campaign for New York's 145th Assembly District, covering Grand Island and western Niagara County. The former Grand Island supervisor aims to revitalize the region's economy, stating that too much money leaves the area without benefiting local communities.

McMurray brings considerable political experience to the race. He previously challenged Congressman Chris Collins in 2018 and ran against Chris Jacobs in a 2019 special election after Collins' resignation due to insider trading charges. McMurray also briefly sought Erie County Executive and mounted a 2024 challenge against Tim Kennedy for Congress.

The upcoming election follows Republican Angelo Morinello's retirement announcement after representing the district since 2017. Morinello has endorsed Rebecca Wydysh, former Niagara County Legislature Chair, to succeed him in the November election.

This race carries potential economic development implications for western Niagara County. McMurray's focus on keeping local money within the region could influence business policies and investment strategies if elected, particularly for Grand Island and Niagara Falls businesses operating in the district.

Quick Fact: Nate McMurray has run for Congress three times previously.
