Louisville Metro Police officers received unexpected assistance from a neighborhood dog during their search for a missing 3-year-old boy in Okolona. The child had been reported missing from the 3900 block of Altair Lane on Jan. 7, prompting a neighborhood canvass with officers on foot, a helicopter, and drone units.

Officer Josh Thompson, who had patrolled the area for two years, encountered the unfamiliar dog while searching a nearby home. The canine followed Thompson and barked, then led him to the backyard after he gestured for help. Thompson and Officer Jonathan Story entered the unlocked back door to search, while the dog ran to a car where they found the terrified child locked inside the front passenger seat.

Officers helped the boy unlock the car and safely returned him to his parents just a street away. Thompson described the emotional reunion, saying the child "jumped out of the car, bear-hugged my neck and wouldn't let go." The incident demonstrates how community members, including pets, can play crucial roles in police operations during missing person searches.
