When I asked my libertarian friend Zach about Donald Trump's presidency, his response revealed how deep political divisions had become. We'd been close for years, bonding over military service and shared humor, but our debates about government regulation and worker protections had always remained civil. That changed after January 6, 2021.

Zach supported Trump from the beginning, seeing him as an outsider who would shake up Washington. I viewed Trump as a dangerous strongman, especially after he mocked John McCain's military service in 2015. Despite my growing alarm over Trump's rhetoric and actions, I maintained our friendship until the Capitol riot made clear we saw reality differently. Zach's lack of appropriate horror watching the insurrection unfold ended our ability to connect.

When Trump won again in 2024 despite promising revenge, mass deportations, and attacks on democratic institutions, our relationship couldn't survive. The final break came as ICE raids escalated, with masked agents violating due process and profiling based on skin color and language. Two American citizens were killed in broad daylight. Zach's continued attempts to justify these actions made clear that our fundamental values had diverged too far to bridge. Sometimes political differences aren't just disagreements - they're incompatible visions of what America should be.
