L3Harris has unveiled plans to pair its Red Wolf miniature cruise missile with the U.S. Air Force's OA-1K Skyraider II light attack aircraft, potentially transforming the platform's combat capabilities. The integration would provide the OA-1K with standoff strike capabilities, allowing it to engage targets from safer distances while maintaining its primary role in close air support and reconnaissance.

The Red Wolf missile, weighing 250 pounds with a small turbojet engine, offers over 200 nautical miles of range at low altitudes and features low-observability characteristics. The U.S. Marine Corps is already acquiring Red Wolf for its AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, demonstrating the system's versatility across different platforms. L3Harris has successfully demonstrated integration of Red Wolf on its Sky Warden aircraft, which became the OA-1K after winning the Air Force's Armed Overwatch competition.

This enhancement could prove crucial as the Air Force shifts focus from counter-terrorism operations to preparing for high-end conflicts, particularly across the Pacific theater. The OA-1K can carry up to 6,000 pounds of munitions on eight pylons, and adding Red Wolf would significantly expand its operational envelope. The system's modular design also allows for potential adaptations including electronic warfare payloads, signal relay capabilities, and even recovery systems for reuse.
