King County Medical Examiner's Office maintains the case is closed, stating their investigation followed standard procedures and found no reason to reopen it. The official autopsy noted a suicide note and high heroin levels, but independent researchers argue the crime scene evidence suggests staging.

Led by forensic specialist Brian Burnett and researcher Michelle Wilkins, the team points to unusual details: bullets and shell receipts found in Cobain's pocket, capped needles near his body, and physical signs like lung fluid and eye bleeding more consistent with overdose than gunshot. Despite their findings and requests to reopen the case, authorities maintain there's insufficient new evidence to warrant further investigation.
