Kroger to Close 60 Stores in Major Restructuring

Kroger, the nation's largest grocery chain, has begun executing a plan to close 60 underperforming stores nationwide as part of a strategic restructuring announced in June 2025. The Ohio-based retailer, which operates 1,230 stores across 16 states, aims to eliminate roughly 5% of its locations over 18 months. The closures target stores that were not performing strongly enough for the brand.

Since the announcement last summer, Kroger has already shuttered 30 stores across multiple states. The closures have been confirmed in California, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia, with multiple locations closing in Colorado (two stores), Indiana (three stores), Georgia (four stores), Illinois (four stores), and five stores each in Virginia and Wisconsin. The company expects to take a short-term financial hit from these closures but anticipates long-term improvements to its financial performance.

Notably, Michigan has been spared from the closures, where Kroger operates 121 stores across 83 cities. The company has confirmed two additional store closures in Texas scheduled for April 10. This strategic move comes as Kroger continues to face competitive pressures in the grocery sector while maintaining its position as one of America's top-ranked grocery chains.
