J&J Commits $1B to Pennsylvania Cell Therapy Plant

Johnson & Johnson announced a $1 billion investment to build a new cell therapy manufacturing facility in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, as part of its broader U.S. manufacturing expansion strategy. The move comes amid President Trump's tariff threats and follows the company's March 2024 pledge to invest more than $55 billion in U.S. operations through 2029.

This latest facility will create over 4,000 construction jobs and 500 permanent biomanufacturing positions once operational. The plant will focus on producing medicines for cancer, immune disorders, and neurological diseases. J&J currently markets Carvykti, its only approved cell therapy for multiple myeloma, demonstrating the company's growing commitment to this treatment category.

The investment aligns with broader industry trends as major pharmaceutical companies respond to U.S. trade policy. The government imposed a 100% tariff on branded drugs from companies without U.S. manufacturing facilities, though the measure excludes those already breaking ground. Eli Lilly and AstraZeneca have similarly committed billions to expand their American manufacturing footprint.

With 10 existing facilities in Pennsylvania generating an estimated $10 billion in annual economic impact, J&J's latest commitment reinforces its position as a major employer and manufacturer in the state. The company did not specify when the new facility will begin operations.
