Kyle Bailey, the last known person to see John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette and Lauren Bessette alive, has revealed his private concerns about their fatal flight in a new book. Bailey, an aviation analyst, witnessed the trio's departure from Essex County Airport on July 16, 1999, noting the thick haze and poor visibility conditions.

Bailey had canceled his own flight to Martha's Vineyard that afternoon due to deteriorating weather. When he saw JFK Jr. take off alone in his Piper Saratoga at 8:38 p.m., he thought, 'I hope he has an instructor with him.' The 25-year-old pilot had been training for instrument flying but was still flying under visual flight rules that night.

The next morning, Bailey received a missing aircraft alert with JFK Jr.'s tail number. Five days later, the wreckage was found in the Atlantic Ocean seven miles southwest of Martha's Vineyard. The NTSB investigation concluded that spatial disorientation, exacerbated by the haze and dark night conditions, caused the crash that killed all three passengers.
