Investigators are examining an incident where a commercial jet took off as President Donald Trump's helicopter, Marine One, approached Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Tuesday. The close proximity has raised concerns about air traffic control in the heavily congested airspace.

Both the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the event. This incident follows safety procedures implemented after a fatal midair collision in 2025 that killed 67 people. Following that tragedy, takeoffs and landings at Reagan National were to be halted when a helicopter passed on a conflicting route.

The FAA stated that a preliminary investigation revealed a "momentary loss of separation" but that the aircraft moved away from each other and were not on a collision course. The White House and Marine Corps officials emphasized that the President was never in danger and that Marine One pilots are highly skilled. The incident highlights past issues with communication between military and civilian air traffic controllers in the area.
