A Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker became the first vessel struck by an Iranian uncrewed surface vessel (USV) during the ongoing conflict, marking a significant escalation in maritime warfare. The MKD VYOM was hit by a suspected explosive-laden drone boat approximately 50 nautical miles north of Muscat, Oman, resulting in one crew member's death and subsequent evacuation of the vessel.

Maritime security firm Ambrey confirmed the attack, which initially appeared to be a projectile strike before UKMTO updated its assessment. The incident demonstrates Iran's expanding use of USVs, weapons it has been developing alongside its Houthi allies in Yemen. These capabilities have already proven devastating in Ukraine's conflict with Russia and the Houthis' campaign against Red Sea shipping.

Since launching Operation Epic Fury, Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of global crude oil passes. The IRGC has warned that any ship attempting passage will be set ablaze, while shipping traffic through the strategic waterway has plummeted by nearly 85%. The U.S. has responded by targeting Iranian naval vessels, with President Trump declaring the destruction of Iran's naval forces a core objective of the campaign.
