Idaho Snow Drought 2026: Worst in Decades Threatens Water Supply

Idaho faces one of its most severe snow droughts in state history as record-high winter temperatures and unseasonably low snowfall create water supply concerns. Hydrologist David Hoekema from the Idaho Department of Water Resources reports that while precipitation levels remain high, the lack of snowpack has triggered drought conditions across nearly 95% of the state.

Current conditions mirror drought years like 1977 and 2015, though with notable differences. The 1977 drought led President Carter to sign emergency drought legislation after wells ran dry and reservoirs hit record lows. This year's scenario combines elements of both 1977 and 2015, with strong high-elevation snowpack but critically low snow water equivalent levels. About 62% of Idaho experiences severe drought, with 9% under extreme conditions affecting over 836,000 residents.

Agricultural and wildfire risks loom large as irrigation districts may restrict water access and farmers could plant fewer crops. While a wet spring could reduce impacts on some river basins, the Bruneau, Owyhee, and Weiser river basins face little recovery potential. Fire officials remain cautious about predicting the upcoming season, though current drought maps show no significant wildfire potential for Idaho through May. The timing of snowmelt may shift dramatically, potentially affecting the state's typical water availability patterns.
