A Houston doctor faces federal charges for allegedly falsifying patient records to block liver transplants. Dr. John Stevenson Bynon Jr. was indicted on five counts of making false statements related to health care, according to federal prosecutors.

Bynon served as director of abdominal organ transplantation at Memorial Hermann Health System. Three of the five patients in question died while two received transplants elsewhere. Authorities claim Bynon acted without the knowledge of patients or their families.

The case has shaken confidence in transplant protocols. Memorial Hermann shut down its liver and kidney transplant program after the allegations surfaced in 2024, later restarting it. If convicted, Bynon could face up to 25 years in prison.
