Historic Bay Area Deli Closes Final Walnut Creek Location After 58 Years

Genova Deli, a family-run institution with 100-year roots, closed its last Walnut Creek location on California Boulevard on Wednesday. The shutdown follows the November closure of its Treat Boulevard site, leaving only the Napa branch operational. Known for Italian sandwiches, marinated artichokes, and ravioli boxes, the deli appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle's list of best restaurants.

Founded in 1926 in Oakland, Genova Deli expanded to Walnut Creek in 1951 under Dominic DeVincenzi, who bought the business after marrying a relative of the original cofounder. The closure stems from "years of navigating increasing economic challenges," according to a company email. Despite the closures, the Walnut Creek ravioli factory remains open, supplying local stores. The original Oakland location closed in 2016, drawing emotional farewells from longtime patrons who recalled its mortadella and salami sandwiches.

Customers expressed deep nostalgia on social media. Roger Colton, a patron since 1970, wrote, "We will miss the friendly staff, especially the family who made it so special." The closures mark the end of an era for East Bay families who frequented the deli for decades. Its Napa location continues operations, though the company did not respond to requests for comment.

The shutdown highlights broader struggles for small, historic businesses facing rising costs and shifting consumer habits. While Genova Deli's legacy persists through its ravioli production and loyal customer base, the loss of its Walnut Creek presence underscores the fragility of longstanding community anchors in the face of economic pressures.
