Vera Mae's Bistro, a downtown Muncie dining institution for 25 years, has abruptly closed its doors. The announcement came via the restaurant's website on March 2, ending a quarter-century run that began in 1999 as a lunch delivery and catering business before evolving into one of the area's most popular dining destinations.

Owned by Kent Shuff and Steve Fennimore, the restaurant became known for hosting family celebrations and helping revitalize Muncie's downtown district. The owners had previously announced in September 2022 that Accutech Systems Corp. had purchased the downtown location, with plans to keep the restaurant operating as a community gathering space.

The closure marks the end of an era for Muncie's dining scene. The owners expressed gratitude for the memories created within its walls while hinting at a new initiative to support local entrepreneurs. The transition from beloved restaurant to new community-focused venture represents both an ending and a beginning for the historic Walnut Street location.
