An Argentine-led research team made an extraordinary discovery in the deep-sea ecosystem off the coast of Argentina, capturing rare footage of a giant phantom jellyfish. The team, operating between Buenos Aires and Tierra del Fuego, documented one of the largest and rarest jellyfish species ever found, with bells exceeding three feet wide and reaching lengths of up to 33 feet.

Beyond the jellyfish sighting, researchers uncovered a massive Candida coral reef and several other reefs collectively covering an area roughly the size of Vatican City. The expedition identified 28 potential new species, revealing unprecedented biodiversity in the Argentine deep sea. Dr. María Emilia Bravo, the expedition's chief scientist, expressed astonishment at the findings, noting the team opened a window into Argentina's biodiversity only to find many more windows left to be opened.

These discoveries underscore the critical importance of ocean exploration and conservation. Researchers found fishing gear and plastic waste perfectly preserved in the ocean's depths, highlighting the vulnerability of these ecosystems. Dr. Jyotika Virmani of the Schmidt Ocean Institute emphasized that the ocean contains 98% of living space on Earth, with each deep-sea expedition revealing life as abundant as on land. The findings reinforce the urgent need to protect marine environments while expanding our understanding of deep-ocean ecosystems.
