A massive great white shark, dubbed "Contender," has been detected off the coast of North Carolina. The shark, the largest male of its kind ever recorded in the Atlantic, weighs nearly 1,700 pounds. The OCEARCH research organization tagged Contender last year, and they've been tracking its movements along the eastern seaboard. This recent ping provides valuable data for ongoing research and conservation efforts.

Contender's tracking data is available through OCEARCH's Global Shark Tracker app. The shark was initially tagged off the Florida/Georgia coast in 2024. The data from the SPOT tag will continue to provide real-time location information Contender was named by OCEARCH in honor of their partner, Contender Boats, Inc., which supports their offshore research missions.
