Federal agents executed search warrants Wednesday at the Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters and Superintendent Alberto Carvalho's home, marking a dramatic escalation in an ongoing federal investigation. The FBI served the warrants at LAUSD's downtown Los Angeles headquarters and the superintendent's modest San Pedro residence.

TV footage showed agents in FBI shirts and jackets outside Carvalho's home about 20 miles south of downtown. The nature of the investigation remains unclear, though federal officials confirmed court-authorized searches were underway. LAUSD and Carvalho's office did not respond to requests for comment.

The sprawling LAUSD serves over 500,000 students across more than two dozen cities, making it the nation's second-largest school district. Carvalho, who took over in February 2022 after leading Miami-Dade County Public Schools, has been credited with improving graduation rates and academic performance in his previous role.
