Europe's Potato Glut: US Tariffs and Trade Wars Hit Farmers

European potato farmers are facing a severe market crisis as bumper harvests collide with falling demand and trade disruptions. In France, protesters dumped over twenty tonnes of potatoes outside the National Assembly, highlighting the industry's struggles. Farmers report that it now costs less to give away potatoes than store them amid plummeting prices.

Supply has surged by 10 percent year-on-year to nearly 30 million tonnes across Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, according to the North-Western European Potato Growers network. This abundance comes as demand weakens due to US tariffs on frozen french fries, a strong euro hurting exports, and increased competition from China, India, Egypt, and Turkey. The NEPG warns that Chinese and Indian frozen fry exports have increased tenfold in two years.

With the March-April planting season approaching, farmers face difficult decisions about future production. French producers report 25 percent drops in contract prices, with Fontane potatoes expected to fall to around 130 euros per tonne in 2026 from 180 euros last year. While industry representatives believe global demand will eventually recover, immediate pressures force farmers to reconsider how much land to dedicate to potatoes as they face the prospect of producing at a loss.
