European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that EU governments are not ready to give Ukraine a specific date for membership, despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's demand for such a commitment as part of security guarantees. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Kallas emphasized that member states are not prepared to set a concrete timeline, citing the extensive work required for EU accession.

Ukraine has been pushing for 2027 membership, which was previously included in a 20-point peace plan discussed among the United States, Ukraine, and the European Union. However, many EU governments view this timeline as unrealistic, noting that EU accession is a merit-based process that requires significant legal and regulatory alignment with EU standards. Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics echoed Kallas's assessment, expressing skepticism about both EU membership timing and prospects for an imminent peace deal with Russia.

The timing of Ukraine's membership aspirations remains closely tied to the ongoing conflict and potential peace negotiations. With Hungary blocking the start of detailed membership talks and Russia showing no signs of movement toward a deal, EU officials suggest that creative solutions may be needed to balance Ukraine's aspirations with the concerns of other accession hopefuls like Western Balkan states and Moldova.
