England's New Recycling Rules: 5 Bins, 65% Target by 2035

England's waste collection system is undergoing its biggest overhaul in decades with new Simpler Recycling rules launching March 31, 2026. Households will need to sort waste into five separate bins for different materials including paper, plastic, glass, food waste and garden waste. The government aims to boost recycling rates to 65% of municipal waste by 2035.

Local authorities will implement standardized recycling across all council areas, ending the current postcode lottery where rules vary by region. Each household will need four main containers: residual waste, food waste (mixed with garden waste if appropriate), paper and card, and all other dry recyclables. The scheme will also extend to businesses and schools, creating uniform recycling standards nationwide.

Weekly food waste collections will become mandatory, while other collection frequencies remain at council discretion. The changes will allow recycling of more plastic items including pots, tubs, trays and cartons that previously went to landfill or incineration. From March 2027, plastic films and bags will also be collected where possible. The reforms aim to create green jobs and support a more circular economy, though some households may find managing multiple bins challenging.
