Two leading endocrinologists have identified legumes as the most underrated food for managing blood sugar after age 50. According to Dr. Sirin Pandey of Inspira Health and Dr. Mohammad Ansari of Houston Methodist West Hospital, legumes like lentils, chickpeas, soybeans and peanuts contain fiber that stabilizes blood sugar and improves insulin sensitivity.

Blood sugar management becomes increasingly critical with age, as the risk of type 2 diabetes rises significantly after 45. The body produces less insulin as we age, while weight gain, particularly visceral fat around the abdomen, becomes more common. These factors combine to increase diabetes risk, making dietary choices essential for prevention and management.

Beyond blood sugar control, legumes offer multiple health benefits for older adults. They're high in protein, which becomes more important with age, and rich in fiber that supports gut health and helps maintain healthy body weight. Dr. Pandey, who eats lentils daily, notes they also promote better sleep, creating a beneficial cycle since good sleep further supports stable blood sugar levels.
