Nicky Lazou, a Dubai-based beauty business owner, found herself stranded in London when Middle East tensions escalated and her flight home was canceled. Her five-year-old son remained in Dubai with their live-in nanny as strikes hit parts of the UAE. Faced with closed borders and canceled flights, Lazou spent $2,500 on an alternative route to return to her son.

Lazou's journey involved flying Oman Air from London Heathrow to Muscat for $1,730, then hiring a driver for $430 to cross the land border into the UAE. A taxi completed the final two-hour drive to her home for $250. The beauty entrepreneur, who moved to Dubai from the UK in 2022, described the experience as shocking since she never expected such instability in the city she chose for its safety and convenience for single mothers.

Despite the disruption, Lazou expressed confidence in Dubai's government response and felt protected. The incident highlights the personal toll of regional conflicts on expatriate families and the extreme measures some parents will take to reunite with their children during crises. Her story underscores how quickly business travel can turn into an emergency when geopolitical tensions flare.
