Deported After 43 Years: Pennsylvania Man Denied Bail

A Pennsylvania man who spent 43 years in prison before his murder conviction was overturned has been denied bail while fighting deportation. Subramanyam Vedam, 64, was taken into immigration custody immediately after his release in October, despite his conviction being vacated based on withheld ballistics evidence.

Vedam's lawyer argued he would likely have become a citizen if not for the murder case, noting his original offense was a minor LSD delivery. The Board of Immigration Appeals agreed to hear his case based on exceptional circumstances, but Immigration Judge Tamar Wilson ruled detention mandatory given his felony drug conviction. The Trump administration had initially sought quick deportation before courts intervened.

Vedam came to the U.S. legally from India as a 9-month-old infant when his parents returned to State College, where his late father was a renowned Penn State professor. His sister, Saraswathi Vedam, had planned to bring him home after his October 3 release, only to see him taken into federal custody instead. The case highlights the complex intersection of criminal justice reform and immigration enforcement.
