Democrats Condemn Failed Indictment Attempt Against Lawmakers

Democratic senators mounted a forceful defense Wednesday against failed Justice Department indictments targeting colleagues who made a video urging military members to resist unlawful orders. Sen. Brian Schatz warned the attempt could threaten the Senate's survival, while Sen. Chris Murphy called it a test that "could break this institution permanently."

The controversy stems from a 90-second video featuring six Democratic lawmakers, including Sens. Slotkin and Kelly, who served in the military. President Trump reacted furiously, labeling the content "seditious" and suggesting punishment "by death." The lawmakers maintained they were simply affirming existing law after receiving military outreach.

Slotkin and Kelly praised the grand jury's decision but expressed concern about administration motives. "This is a story about how Trump and his cronies are trying to break our system," Kelly said. The senators have asked the Justice Department to confirm the investigation is closed, though it remains unclear whether prosecutors plan to continue pursuing the case.
