A Delta Air Lines flight from Houston to Atlanta made an emergency landing Wednesday after a passenger attempted to access the cockpit, the pilot told air traffic controllers. Delta flight 2557, a Boeing 717 aircraft carrying 85 passengers and five crew members, declared an emergency shortly after takeoff from Houston's Hobby Airport.

Air traffic recordings captured the pilot requesting security and medical personnel, reporting the passenger had assaulted another traveler before being restrained. The aircraft landed safely about 17 minutes after departure, with emergency vehicles escorting it to the gate. This incident occurred amid rising concerns about unruly passenger behavior, with 1,621 incidents reported to the FAA in 2025 and 126 already recorded in 2026.

Delta later clarified that while the passenger approached crew and customers, they did not make contact with or attempt to access the flight deck. The airline emphasized its zero-tolerance policy for unruly behavior and apologized for the disruption. The flight eventually departed again, arriving in Atlanta approximately 90 minutes behind schedule. The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident, which highlights ongoing challenges airlines face in maintaining onboard security.
