COVID-19 Jumps Between Humans and Zoo Animals

A Nature Communications study revealed how COVID-19 spread from humans to big cats at Denver Zoo in 2021, infecting tigers, lions, and hyenas across separate enclosures. Researchers were baffled by the transmission pattern, as none of the species had direct contact with each other despite living in different communities.

Veterinarian and virologist Sue VandeWoude noted the unusual sequential infection of three species while acknowledging the zoo implemented significant precautions. The animals all recovered, but researchers discovered the virus mutated during its animal hosts, developing traits that could enhance viral replication and fitness. These mutations potentially allow viruses to survive longer and infect more hosts.

This research underscores the importance of understanding viral transmission between species, particularly as climate change expands vector habitats and threatens to accelerate disease spread. While human-to-animal transmission remains rare, the study highlights how viruses can adapt and evolve during cross-species jumps, emphasizing the need for continued research to inform vaccine development and public health strategies.
