China's Hypersonic Missile Reach: US Cities in Minutes

A hypersonic missile launched from mainland China could strike Hawaii in 47 minutes, Seattle in 51 minutes, and New York in 64 minutes, according to calculations based on China's DF-27A missile capabilities. The missile travels at Mach 8.6, covering approximately 6,598 miles per hour. While China possesses various missile systems, the DF-27A's maneuverability makes it particularly concerning for defense planners.

China's arsenal includes the DF-27A with its hypersonic glide vehicle technology, which is significantly harder to track and intercept than traditional ballistic missiles. The missile's range limitations mean it cannot directly strike most U.S. mainland cities from Chinese territory. However, China possesses longer-range intercontinental ballistic missiles like the DF-5C, which can reach the continental United States from launch sites within China.

Defense analysts note that while the DF-27A cannot reach most U.S. cities, China's DF-5C ICBM could deliver a nuclear warhead to New York in approximately 25 minutes at speeds reaching Mach 22. This dramatic reduction in warning time compared to Cold War-era missiles presents significant challenges for U.S. missile defense systems. The development of hypersonic glide vehicles represents a technological leap that could potentially defeat existing missile defense architectures designed for traditional ballistic missile trajectories.
