China revealed for the first time the launch of the YJ-20 missile from a smaller destroyer, paving the way for one of its most advanced hypersonic weapons to be deployed on the fleet of vessels. The demonstration marks a significant escalation in the People's Liberation Army Navy's strike capabilities, suggesting the weapon could soon be standard across a wider range of surface combatants.

Previously, hypersonic anti-ship missiles were thought to be limited to larger platforms or land-based launchers. The successful test from a Type 052D-class guided-missile destroyer indicates Beijing has overcome integration challenges related to space, power, and targeting on smaller hulls.

Analysts say the move enhances China's ability to threaten carrier groups and key maritime chokepoints in the Western Pacific. The YJ-20's reported speed of Mach 5-plus and maneuverability complicate existing missile defense architectures, potentially shifting the regional balance of power.

The revelation aligns with broader PLA modernization goals emphasizing distributed lethality and anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) strategies. As the PLN expands its destroyer fleet, the YJ-20 could become a cornerstone of its maritime power projection.
