Chicago Border Patrol Shooting Sparks Controversy

Federal prosecutors have released bodycam footage in the case of Marimar Martinez, a Chicago woman shot multiple times by a Border Patrol agent during an immigration crackdown last fall. The video contradicts the Department of Homeland Security's initial account that Martinez had rammed the agents with her car, instead suggesting the agents struck her vehicle themselves. Martinez, a Montessori school teacher, was following the agents on October 4 to warn residents of their presence when the collision occurred.

In the bodycam video, one agent could be heard saying 'do something, bitch' shortly before the vehicles made contact. Agent Charles Exum, who was driving, said 'It's time to get aggressive' before the collision, then fired five shots after the vehicles collided. Martinez drove off and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. The DHS initially claimed Martinez had 'ambushed' the border patrol vehicle and that an agent fired in self-defense.

Martinez was indicted on charges of impeding a federal officer, but the charges were dropped in November. The DHS statement labeling her a 'domestic terrorist' remains online. Her lawyer, Christopher Parente, said she plans to file a civil lawsuit. The records released also included text messages from Exum bragging about his marksmanship, writing 'I fired 5 rounds and she had 7 holes. Put that in your book, boys.' The case has drawn increased attention following fatal shootings by federal immigration agents of protesters in Minneapolis last month.
