A tractor-trailer plunged into the Chesapeake Bay early Monday morning near the North Channel Bridge, causing major disruptions to southbound traffic. The accident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. on February 15, with the truck going overboard on the west side of the southbound span just south of Fisherman's Island.

Maintenance crews from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel are on site making emergency repairs to damaged guardrails and curbs. The US Coast Guard is assisting in search efforts for the vehicle and driver. Southbound lanes remain blocked as crews work to clear the scene and recover the truck from the water.

Officials expect to reopen the southbound lanes by 8:45 a.m., though travelers should anticipate significant delays during the morning commute. The incident comes as the facility continues work on the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel Project, which will eventually provide dedicated southbound lanes through a new two-lane tunnel under Thimble Shoal Channel.
