Charleston Police are warning shoppers about a sophisticated scam targeting people in grocery store parking lots. The scheme involves groups of 4-5 suspects who crowd victims as they leave stores, claiming to collect donations for emergencies like funerals or medical bills. The scammers refuse cash and instead pressure victims to tap their credit cards on portable readers.

Detective James Jackson of the Charleston Police Department says victims have lost thousands of dollars, with some reporting losses of up to nearly $10,000. The scammers specifically target young mothers, using emotional manipulation when they see children in shopping carts. Police have identified patterns of suspects, mostly men in their 20s and 30s, who travel from other parts of the country to perpetrate these crimes.

Similar incidents have been reported at multiple grocery stores across the Charleston area. Authorities urge residents to stay alert and report suspicious activity. Police are offering scam prevention presentations to neighborhoods, churches, and community organizations. They encourage people to be aware of their surroundings and call police if they notice anything unusual. Officers are actively working to locate and apprehend the identified suspects.
