Physicists at CERN's Large Hadron Collider have successfully transmuted lead into gold, recreating an ancient alchemical goal. By colliding lead particles at near-light speed, they generated 86 billion gold nuclei. Although impressive in number, this quantity is minuscule, totaling only trillionths of a gram. The gold atoms quickly decayed, highlighting the challenges of artificial gold production.

This achievement stems from the atomic differences between lead and gold, primarily the number of protons in their nuclei. The researchers employed high-speed particle collisions to strip protons from lead atoms, thus transforming them into gold. This process, while scientifically significant, yields an insignificant amount of gold, making it impractical for any practical applications or market impact.

Previous attempts to create gold artificially have occurred, including in 1941 and 2022. The CERN experiments build on this history. While the science is fascinating, the costs and inefficiencies of this method mean gold production via this process isn't commercially viable. The research does, however, advance our understanding of nuclear physics.
