California HMPV Virus Spreading: What You Need to Know

A respiratory virus called human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is spreading across Northern California, with wastewater data showing high concentrations in communities like Merced, Novato, and Sunnyvale. The virus, which lacks both a vaccine and specific treatment, has been detected in Los Angeles County at low to moderate levels, according to the WastewaterScan Dashboard.

HMPV isn't new - it was first identified in 2001 - but its seasonal patterns were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Before 2020, Americans regularly encountered seasonal viruses like HMPV, building natural immunity. During pandemic lockdowns, this exposure disappeared, leaving people more vulnerable when normal activities resumed. Unlike other respiratory illnesses, there's no vaccine available for HMPV.

Most infections cause mild, cold-like symptoms including cough, fever, and nasal congestion. However, the virus can progress to more serious conditions like pneumonia, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, young children, and older adults. With no specific treatment available, experts recommend rest and fluids while symptoms persist. Prevention measures mirror those for other respiratory illnesses: frequent handwashing, surface cleaning, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.
