A Santa Clara County resident infected with measles visited a Panda Express in Burlingame twice while contagious, prompting a public health response across two Bay Area counties. The adult, who recently returned from international travel, dined at the restaurant on February 23 and 24 between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. while infectious.

Health officials warn that unvaccinated, pregnant, or immunocompromised individuals who were at the 1453 Burlingame Avenue location during those hours may be at risk. The patient also visited private work and healthcare locations while contagious. Santa Clara and San Mateo county health departments are working with state officials to identify and notify potentially exposed individuals.

This marks the first confirmed measles case in a Santa Clara County resident since May 2025 and the 22nd reported in California this year. The United States has surpassed 1,136 confirmed infections in 2026 as of February 26, nearly halfway to last year's total of 2,256 cases. Public health experts attribute the surge to falling vaccination rates, warning that community immunity below the 95% threshold needed to prevent spread puts the nation's measles-elimination status at risk.
