Bitcoin's Plunge Triggers Margin Calls for Crypto Borrowers

Bitcoin's dramatic slide from its October peak above $126,000 to around $70,000 has ignited fears of margin calls for investors who borrowed against their holdings. This strategy, once seen as a savvy way to access liquidity without selling, now threatens to force liquidations as collateral values evaporate. The pain is acute for those who speculated on a $200,000 price target that never materialized.

Crypto-collateralized lending exploded to a record $73.6 billion, with platforms like Coinbase and Binance offering loans with loan-to-value ratios typically capped at 50% to 75%. In decentralized finance (DeFi), outstanding loans hit $41 billion last quarter. These structures work in bull markets but become perilous during sustained downturns, as borrowers face potential forfeiture of their digital assets.

The current environment is being labeled a full-blown crypto winter by Bitwise's Matt Hougan, who predicts a decline lasting more than a year based on historical cycles. One investor, who borrowed via a peer-to-peer platform, has her entire retirement in bitcoin and remains defiant. Yet the scale of leverage embedded in the system suggests the recent bloodletting may not be over.

Quick Fact: Crypto-collateralized lending reached a record $73.6 billion, Galaxy Research reported.
